Digital Community Research Article

Foulger, T. S., Ewbank, A. D., Kay, A., Popp, S. O., & Carter, H. L. (2009). Moral spaces in MySpace: Preservice teachers' perspectives about ethical issues in social networking. Journal of Research on Technology in Education, 42(1), 1-28.

  1. I do not see teachers reading digital community posts as similar to reading a personal diary because there is no expectation of privacy in an online post. It is there for anyone to see. In fact, the writer invites others to see his or her posts. Also, teachers are required by law to protect the welfare of their students. I don’t see how a teacher can differentiate between harmful things seen online and harmful things seen in person.
  2. The categories of the ethical concerns framework my responses fall in are “Assumed Risk” “Others Welfare.”
  3. This study was conducted at Arizona State University, a secular university.
  4. After reading the study and the data presented, I’m not sure I could expect to see different results from a Christian institution. Personal rights are such a part of the American culture that they are assumed. There should be a difference in that students and teachers in Christian educational institutions generally sign a conduct policy that includes behavior both on and off campus.
