In this presentation we are going to focus on two social media programs, Facebook and Twitter, which both have the stipulation that you are aged 13 or older.
Some ideas to use Social Media in the classroom were found in an article entitled “the effect of Twitter on college student engagement and grades” by Junco, Heibergert & Loken. The students also connected better with each other and college adaptation.
Some best practices to use are assessing cyberbullying. It is going on in today’s society, pretty regularly as Stephanie has mentioned. Develop clear policies for teachers to use, provide staff training, over 50% of teachers do not feel adequately trained to determine if cyberbullying is occurring (according to Peter Levy in the article “Digital Citizenship” in The Journal). You also want to teach students online netiquette and positive digital citizenship. You can also form parent/community partnerships to help the students. A verse that is excellent for reinforcement in a positive way is May the Words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart by acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer (Psalm 19:14).
It is limited to 140 characters and it is called a tweet. Followers are people who join your community through organizations, individual people groups, or a company. You can follow anyone that creates an account.
There are some excellent education communities on Twitter. Some pros would be the information gleaned, shared, and posted in tweets. The ability to network and connect with others from around the world. Some cons, would be the limit of 140 characters and the time management aspect. It can be addicting.
Facebook is a great tool in being able to connect with students. You can see their status, events, and message them. You can mentor them and provide guidance. You can also teach them how their Facebook lives are public, not private.
A con is that students check their Facebook multiple times a day (as you say in the video); however, it is a huge time taker. It is also addicting.
Some resources that you can use that are in realm of social media include Glogster, which is poster, dioramas, or mobiles. SchoolTube, Inc. is where teachers, students, administration and parents, can find videos relating to all topics. Ning is where you can make a social website, such as an app for a smartphone. Web2.0 are free tools that you can use to enhance your teaching. Collaborize Classrooms extend your classroom into a structured private online community to continue discussions after the class has ended. Kidblog and Edublogs are places that you can have discussions in a blogging format. Edublogs has 701,744 blogs and counting according to Internet @schools Magazine. Survey Monkey is a program where you can create a survey for your students to find out demographics or their ideas.

Wiki/blogs are defined as ways that you can extend your classroom by hosting discussions, forms, team projects, and collaborative learning, According to J. Shim. This teaches them how to work in the 21stCentury workplace with the necessary skills.
A forum is where you establish guidelines and ask questions that the students respond to. This allows discussions to continue on after the class time is completed and outside of the classroom. Ways that I incorporate blogs/wikis is with smart board recording, (this allows a student to follow the mathematic component as many times as necessary for them to get it), blogging on our reading assignments, and reviewing for tests/quizzes with fun review questions on our unit. I assign each student aliases to allow them to write and not have the students know who is writing. And I require so many blogs per grading period. I also have a Wiki that I placed documents in for those who may be absent or those who would like additional help. Parents also use the blogs and wiki’s to see what is coming up or how their children are responding. A great verse is Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 2:5 – 6).
As you heard this evening – social media is defined as anything that lets people interact online.
Ethics are defined as a system of moral principles.
Cyberbullying practices, good boundaries between student and teachers and staff training.
Some social media benefits are increased connectivity, extended opportunities, online collaboration, preparing students for 21stCentury skills and the workplace.
Some disadvantages are the time stewardship, not everyone has technology access, cyberbullying, cyber stalking, cyber harassment, cyber predators, cyber stealing, and not being good digital citizens.
The purpose of social media is to expand the classroom with different tools/resources and to teach 21stCentury skills to our students to have them be prepared to engage in the virtual realm as good stewards, good digital citizens, and the ability to be kind to one another by not bullying, harass, becoming a victim or becoming a predator, or stealing.
